STAGE 1 OF NGAHINAPOURI FIBRE PROJECT BEGINS
Lightwire is bringing fibre into the Ngahinapouri community. This means part of the community within the orange boundary will soon have access to the speeds and reliability of fibre internet in the city from here.
There will be disruptions to the roads as we build through the village and into the surrounding streets. The school will be affected by these works from 27th May – end of June and then we will begin building fibre to homes.
Lightwire believes that people living out of the city shouldn’t suffer with poor internet speeds, so we are pleased to be able to meet the demand for fibre in Ngahinapouri. For more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Fibre broadband is the latest technology to deliver fast reliable internet. The reason is because fibre cables can deliver much faster speeds with no interference from radio signals or environmental effects.
Chorus is intending to disestablish the legacy copper network. When and how this will happen in most rural areas is yet to be determined.
Fibre is expensive to build because it’s built underground to your home directly. Hence why rural properties with long driveways (sometimes 5km from their next neighbour) don’t make financial sense for large telcos to invest in. High density areas in CBDs and multi-unit dwellings are the most cost-effective way to build fibre, because the distance to the next new connection is so much closer than a neighbour in a rural setting.
Lightwire Rural Fibre is a private network, there is no government funding.
Lightwire has seen the need for better communications in rural towns overlooked by large telcos and has decided to invest in the community.
Most Retail Service Providers(RSPs) lease the infrastructure to provide you the internet service. A larger carrier who owns a fibre network gets a kick back every time an RSP leases some of the network.
A private network is one where the carrier is also the RSP. It owns the fibre network and provides the service to the end customer. It also means that you can’t ring up another RSP and buy their services, because they can’t lease the network (that’s private).
Because bespoke. private networks for rural towns/villages are expensive to build, the end price for your internet bill may be more expensive than a bill you get from an inner-city apartment.
Not really. There is no point in taking advantage of a fibre install alone in the context of our private network. This is because by utilising the private network, you may only use Lightwire’s services.
