Connecting communities is what we love to do! That’s why we’re supporting local community fundraising team, The Flying Dutchmen, in their fundraising activities for the annual Trillian Trek. Approached by Lightwire customers, Danielle, Scott, Mike and Brett van den Bemd, we were only too happy to show our support, pledging two bikes per year to be given to children in need as The Flying Dutchmen makes its way around the country distributing grants and providing entertainment for children throughout New Zealand.
The Flying Dutchmen and the Trillian Trek
For more than five years now, the van den Bemd brothers have formed an integral part of The Flying Dutchmen, putting their lives on hold and taking their 1967 Bedford Fire Truck on the road as part of this ‘madcap adventure, full of eccentric cars’.
Formerly known as The Variety Bash, the Trillian Trek is a quirky, non-competitive, car rally that see’s ‘Trekkers’ drive hundreds of kilometres throughout the year, spreading as much joy as they can, all in the name of raising funds for disadvantaged and disabled Kiwi kids.
Connect with your community
You can follow the Trillian Trek’s Mini Trek, a three-day fundraiser from 18– 20 October 2019. Celebrating its 25th year, they’ll be traversing the North Island – starting in Te Awamutu and stopping in Waihi before finishing in the Coromandel Region.
The main seven-day fundraiser takes place every March, when approximately 135 people and 34 themed cars, buses, trucks, and fire engines travel through New Zealand handing out grants, giveaways, sports gear, and more to communities, schools and individuals.
